You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes,
you just might find you get what you need.
– The Rolling Stones
There are times when the things we want aren’t meant for us. Sometimes the competitor prepared harder and played smarter. Sometimes our expectations were too high. Sometimes our efforts were inadequate. Sometimes the opportunity is just not there. Disappointments suck and it can bite (and shred!) your insides with its sharp teeth of doubt and insecurity. I know it’s something you should get used to being in the “real world” and all, but even so, it would be a lie to say that defeat becomes less bitter as you get older – it doesn’t. Falling short of a dream is as heartbreaking as it was 10 years ago. Even if you’ve encountered more than a dozen failures since, it will still hurt. What’s different is how you dwell on it. You look back on the previous times and realize you have been through setbacks before and that you will get through this again. The stimulus may be the same, but your reaction will be different. You are not the same person as you were back then. You are stronger, more tenacious, and more resilient. At least, I hope you are.
And oh, leaving you a scene from one of my favorite movies, LOL. Let’s sing along?
